Winter Solstice Poem
Between
What do you wanna be? and
Where do you wanna be?
Or is it your capacity to see faces in patterns?
The people drop off one by one
Leaving the stars and the silence
Longest nights for sleeping
If you’re lucky
Ease in to what you are, where you are
They’re all days to you
What do you wanna be? and
Where do you wanna be?
Or is it your capacity to see faces in patterns?
The people drop off one by one
Leaving the stars and the silence
Longest nights for sleeping
If you’re lucky
Ease in to what you are, where you are
They’re all days to you

What Comes First
The press
Nobody no one
Fetched further
Weathered whatever
What they serve vs. what they save
You see risks and rewards and they just see costs
Casualties? Catastrophes? Causes?
Rolls were born to be unrolled
Inches to be hard won
When they start to hear you
You’ll be gone
Nobody no one
Fetched further
Weathered whatever
What they serve vs. what they save
You see risks and rewards and they just see costs
Casualties? Catastrophes? Causes?
Rolls were born to be unrolled
Inches to be hard won

No No It’s Not Broken
So they invented vertical hold
Someone had time
While the world slept
And snow fell.
What do poolboys think where angels fear tread?
Wrap it around your finger a bit tighter
Reflecting off the moon
Your loudest setting
Your longest mile.
What is lost?
Someone had time
While the world slept
And snow fell.
What do poolboys think where angels fear tread?
Wrap it around your finger a bit tighter
Reflecting off the moon
Your loudest setting
Your longest mile.
What is lost?

What they’re saying, what they mean, what they fear

Step
Step forward and or over
Catalyst vs cataclysmic
Dotted or dashed, what’s your intention?
Perhaps a bouquet is best
The first contact between two cultures
The life you’ve lived, told by distant relatives
Someone had to get their start in this smoke business
Or lens
Or machine parts
It’s called society

Foxes Screaming in Forests
It’s all facts
Bracelets, tshirts, sunshine
The way the earth rotates
Acres and hectares and square footage
That resolution is a function of reality
The way distance becomes speed becomes time
Because the way chemical equations work and so we work and so on
What is a line to a cube?
What is the sand to the sound?
What is what is what is making sense
You pick the curve, you pick the day
We’ll walk as the sun somethings
And spider populations collapse up the seaboard
We’ll turn it sideways just as everything shows itself and shines

Day / Night
That point where you see letters sliding around, words pulled apart from meaning — this couldn’t be further.
Upside down faces and signals loose of their moorings, you could say.
Two strategic dots, a pragmatic sharpie, what color?
I usually can’t taste something after I’ve stood over the stove cooking it. I read everyone’s reaction. There are exceptions.
A string of ands like a stack of turtles and then the world.
A judicious something else and any comparison would just take.
A two-handed gesture. A two-handed, full-bodied gesture.
You know what you’re saying. You know what you mean.

I’m In
What’s good vs. what’s good?
All the checkmarks in all the columns
Everything that is right about an onion
Choosing a two-way arrow to connect the clearest concepts
Meanwhile, a grab bag of aphorisms posing as a viewpoint or a conversation or a country
Or a collection of screenshots standing in for an experience you’ll always remember
Mostly, admittedly, candidly, and curt
That’s the thing about an echo
Or a period
Or an internal investigation into a matter of finances
It’s the number 1 more often than you’d think
It’s the presence of just the right number of coincidences
You can build it up from the classics or break it down from the sky
There are stars and there are seeds but we step back and they are just one thing
The stretches of space are the loneliest
Fare thee well, friends

All the Things That Lean
You look around and you don’t have it quite right
You don’t think
A glass of wine but a pint of beer
Just the right framing with great lighting
But marks and means and more
Mooring I mean
And you say circles. See circles?
Cantilever comes to mind
And better times with any number of better things
I can tell you about the Money Money Bar in Chiang Mai and the plate of chicken that melted Margaret’s face off
Or a crab shack on the water with all of our friends
Or sitting in the backyard with folks rain or shine or both in one day
But the forest probably smells the best it has in 50 years — maybe more

No No Rave Gave Up
The unburnt the unbecoming
Once where fuel began
Or look up how limestone happened and think of just how much that was out there happening
Listen, every argument has its kinks
Every country its kids
Every coat its closures
Every base putting it all together the best it can because it believes
How do you believe at this point?
One foot in front of the other?
The right-sized bowl for every goldfish?
We don’t have to get it all to get somewhere
Let’s go
I’d end with “let’s go” every time if I could get away with it

Sketch for Portrait of Shadows in the Golden Hour
Innumerable things are not my cup of tea,
There are, there are
Staging left and right as boulevards shudder
I will not, as I’m looking
That I am, that I will, as I’m looking
Clouds over head, cups of coffee, still, as I am
The days of the week, they conspire
But it all started with a break in the middle, they tell me
Satchels full of assumption about you, about me
Are they even scales if they are lopsided?
This world you live in and everyone it was made for
Twisted like that, like these days you make it through
You’re told to think of a number, but you head is filled with swimming tests
I’m told to take a minute, and everything is suddenly golden
We are assaulted by counterfeits, you and I
We are doing our best
What do all their metaphors about Rome even matter
Streets are sinking all around us and they want to talk perspective
Keep a go-bag at hand, we’ll leave after sundown someday
There are, there are
Staging left and right as boulevards shudder
I will not, as I’m looking
That I am, that I will, as I’m looking
Clouds over head, cups of coffee, still, as I am

I Don’t Know When I Don’t Know Why
We all start somewhere
Around the world, outside your door
There’s a rash of indoor planting
Indoor playing, indoor connecting, and so on
I don’t know when because what is time now
I don’t know why because, still, what is time now
Speed can be an equation and can be part of this
Equations can be functions and might be part of this
But if we start joining reasons and seasons then I’ll show you this is dangerous
Like speakers saying books are dangerous
And videos vis à vis radio stars
Phones before them, the internet after, and phones again after that
This soapbox was made with a phone
And so fishbowls, dynamite, the price of tea in China, rain again or sunsets
Around the world, outside your door
There’s a rash of indoor planting
Indoor playing, indoor connecting, and so on
I don’t know when because what is time now
I don’t know why because, still, what is time now

Day Many Lost
Kinder quartered coughing
Chameleon kindred finding blenders
Anything to save the salt or save on salt — I can’t quite recall
Anything to sit with rolling clouds, scattered sunsets, and golden hour after hour
By the water, by the woods, but we’ll take what we can get
And always will
Want me to string something out for you?
Sing a chorus of basement salamanders
Chameleon kindred finding blenders
Anything to save the salt or save on salt — I can’t quite recall

Can’t Hurt, Won’t Hurt
Full of fists closed over fists
Quantified waves when we need them and when we don’t
We let out our length
We keep it there
And there and there
They’re gonna come for us
They are and always have been
But we are and always have been, too
I mean, the world has ways and so do you
And from corner to corner there’ll be collecting
Then unexpected explosions, then flash floods, then algae bloom after bloom after bloom
You’ve got so many fonts at your fingertips but so many fewer feelings
There’s a camera
Quantified waves when we need them and when we don’t
We let out our length
We keep it there
And there and there
They’re gonna come for us
They are and always have been

Wootchoo / Woot Hop
The thing is caramel
The thing is time
The thing is disruption, distraction, and distortion
I mean birds in Virginia, backup singers, and bad choices
Because someone invented musical roads
And there’s a house somewhere with two Albrights in it
These things can make sense
Like an unexpected complement of succulents on an otherwise ordinary day
Fuck. That. Guy.

Earthful
The felled over long-ass days all Summer
One life smears into the next
Too many stories and too many styles
Every song a siren’s song
This wheel, that beachcomber bonfire
This jacquard became the center of our lives
That switch became another became another and now we’re driving places after sundown
When gains are twinned with memories
When your sense of self subtracts time
When gravity
When back-lighting
When dilation
When deference
Smoke rises into the night somewhere
Let’s count

Wares, Err, Mod, Five
Everybody comes to me
A fish with a suitcase
Your fourth grade teacher
And the other one, too
The castle walls are prickly with vines
We tell stories in the evening
We’ve had our supper
We are still Americans
What’s left is relative
Pile pliable materials for pickup
Remembering those small fridges
Small ice trays for small ice
We’ve got what we got after we get it
Amber and then asphalt and still time

Feather Fallow Sparrow Sound
What started with heat
Several stages of closeness and as many of distance
The Mid-Atlantic humidity of full-throated July
What started as a sketch
What started as a Sunday
What started somewhere and went everywhere
You divide things by other things
You walk around the block
Flowers burst forth
Suns blaze
We’ll all make metals
We’ll all be sure

Stand. Standoff. Stand off-ish.
Stanley. Stained.
Step sim seldom say.
Stim stun stellar. Submarine. Submerge. Subtle. Not so.
I don’t know what you want.

Hope hills and hirelings.
Heave heavens, have among the stars.
Stare blankly and in full.
Hole, whole holy.
These bleached garments, then birds, then soil.
Upon days until grayest gray.

Reruns and truer cats

Winter Summer
Bright outside the window
As seen from climate-control
Probably warm, probably humid
Nobody’s going out, again
The smell of old woodsmoke from the fireplace
I’m opening the blinds onto the neighbor’s yard
The azaleas past their prime,
The pachysandra vs. the weeds and the poison ivy
Generations of deer and foxes
An errant box turtle of some sort
The ghost of former elms and everything else that’s left
Nobody’s leaving, again
As seen from climate-control
Probably warm, probably humid

Blanked?
Blanked
Some kid under a tree reading a book on their phone
A pile of jokes
A pile of bricks

And is there a middle seat in France?
The spirits wrap around us
Lovely fingers
Lovely arms
Your on the moon
Head held high

Fools Fight Waves / Ghost Poem
Fools fight waves with force
But aren’t we all fools
We’ve all had shit on our hands
Dirt in our teeth, our stomachs
This life is more than we can ever know
So big, so small
What is this skin?
What are these equations?
Were fences the first of too many bad ideas over too much time?
One thought doesn’t make anything any thing?
And I will not go
And we lived through all the typos
We kept living through all the typos
We are so many, every one
Boxes, circles, piles, fences
Cords, calls, stations, statements
Rivers loom large, again
Train tracks, unasked for gifts, and nouns and verbs conspiring in every corner
Shrouds are made for wrapping
Perspective, another still
Still, stiller, still
Call it what
But aren’t we all fools
We’ve all had shit on our hands
Dirt in our teeth, our stomachs
This life is more than we can ever know
So big, so small
What is this skin?
What are these equations?

I’ve Seen Sidewalks
Stories, fruit, farm implements
Weather, questions, household pets
Worry, social settings, interior decorating
Backing out to architecture, no resolution
Breakfast, sunshine, family
Breakfast, regrets, more weather
Breakfast, farewells, new beginnings
Shapes, ideas, emotion
Sound on sound on sound on sound
What you mean to me, what you meant to me
A good sweater in Fall, always moving, the things you can’t hold onto

Derby Day 2020
I made curried onion-tomato relish for backyard burgers
But mice made the cutest nest in our grill, so we redirected
The relish will keep for a week or more, no problem
Ordered a whole fried chicken and a half rack of ribs
With all the sides
And they’re delivering
So I made mint juleps with what was on hand
To sip in the backyard
This weather I’ll tell you
No horses are running the track today
But I’m sure plenty of horses are running all over the place
And having a pretty fucking great day
This weather
But mice made the cutest nest in our grill, so we redirected
The relish will keep for a week or more, no problem
Ordered a whole fried chicken and a half rack of ribs
With all the sides
And they’re delivering
So I made mint juleps with what was on hand
To sip in the backyard
This weather I’ll tell you
No horses are running the track today
But I’m sure plenty of horses are running all over the place
And having a pretty fucking great day
This weather

I Only Want to Die in Your Eyes
You can stay angry
That’ll take you somewhere
Terminus is a stupid word
And a pear, a subtle fruit
Things that taste like air
Confusions of perspective
Trompe l’oeil paintings in the age of holograms
You can’t make this shit up
Slogans spray-painted on sidewalks
We lived
Admit joy
Fred 2019
Fuck everyone
Followed by perfect paths along quiet streets
Rectangles, forgotten tongues, and all the sorrows
It’s just rain
It’s just rain
It’s just rain
That’ll take you somewhere
Terminus is a stupid word
And a pear, a subtle fruit
Things that taste like air

Where Without Precedent
When without precedent and far from home
When without arms or ammunition in a war-torn backyard
When without aims but surrounded by truth
When without wares, wherefores, whyso
When without admittance, and you can hear all the good times that close
When without relief, escape, or exit
When without agency and seemingly knee-deep in so much caring
When without
When without arms or ammunition in a war-torn backyard
When without aims but surrounded by truth
When without wares, wherefores, whyso
When without admittance, and you can hear all the good times that close
When without relief, escape, or exit
When without agency and seemingly knee-deep in so much caring
When without

We’ve Got to Talk About Now
Take a closer look
Here and gone
All the dots smeared
All the things we pick up
All the places ‘round here
I’ll try to help you
We’ll put our heads together
And I’ll try
Here and gone
All the dots smeared
All the things we pick up
All the places ‘round here
I’ll try to help you
We’ll put our heads together
And I’ll try

Like Every Other
They tell stories about after midnight
Language so round
So round or stabby
Chasing a ball through the long grass
Watching the sun set
We lived
We lived, they say
Telling stories about after midnight
We let them, we let it, we walked on
A chicken in every chicken house
A lamb in every field
Something in the glenn and something else in the dell
I hope we ate well today
I hope we’ll sleep sound
Language so round
So round or stabby
Chasing a ball through the long grass
Watching the sun set
We lived
We lived, they say
Telling stories about after midnight

We Lived
Maybe it’s the times, but I’m having a moment of seeing everything
Maybe it’s the times, but I don’t have space for cutting
Maybe it’s the times, but I can’t believe the believe
Maybe it’s the times, but I’m ok with stages having exits
Maybe it’s the times, but we’ve been here before
Maybe it’s the times, but I don’t have space for cutting
Maybe it’s the times, but I can’t believe the believe
Maybe it’s the times, but I’m ok with stages having exits
Maybe it’s the times, but we’ve been here before

Untitled
Never in my life have I seen
Onward and upward onward and upwArd
The way it is because because
A river is to a stream
On a sidewalk outside a club inside the sprawl
The end is the end for some
But we continue
What do you want me to write over everything
Silver or gold or severance
Skinny now
Or scared
Little cuts o Ln your hands that you don’t remember
Like one in every five days
Here are the sirens
Here’s it all
Onward and upward onward and upwArd
The way it is because because
A river is to a stream
On a sidewalk outside a club inside the sprawl
The end is the end for some
But we continue
What do you want me to write over everything
Silver or gold or severance
Skinny now

It’s Bad Enough That I Have
Citrus plays a central role in the local economy,
Vans drive to churches in better times,
Third rows seats all the way down
And the smoothest tones over everything.
Where do we put our hands?
What do we do with all this excess of surfeit or sometimes?
Tender a balance, tender the witness, tend to a way.
Communication is all we got
Vans drive to churches in better times,
Third rows seats all the way down
And the smoothest tones over everything.
Where do we put our hands?
What do we do with all this excess of surfeit or sometimes?
Tender a balance, tender the witness, tend to a way.
Communication is all we got

When You Think of the Number 8
Shining shores
Is it silica?
What the fuck’s wrong with you
Is it silica?
All the things real and plastic among them.
What you mean when you mean.
When you are mean
When you’re after
What you’re after.
One collection after another
And then everyone’s gone.
Is it silica?
What the fuck’s wrong with you
Is it silica?
All the things real and plastic among them.
What you mean when you mean.
When you are mean
When you’re after
What you’re after.
One collection after another
And then everyone’s gone.

Why Not Call It What It Is?
All the things well-installed blinds can do with a sunny day
And your favorite reading spot
All the bridges that are worth a damn
A guitar that talks, and do your remember diners?
All the life at all the altitudes
Your stomach floating when you crest a hill at speed — in a car, on a rollercoaster
The history of pictorial communication
Hands pressed against one another
Meadow air
No need to lock it all up in a box
No need, no more
And your favorite reading spot

Speed Round
Circle stops spines
Special special spry
Not breathing, breathing, not breathing
So many people everywhere you look
Someone fishing
Someone riding a horse on a path
All the lightning strikes in all the lands
The invention of the graphite pencil
A fresh haircut
Sweep the floors, sweep the floors
Write it down
Special special spry
Not breathing, breathing, not breathing
So many people everywhere you look

Someone riding a horse on a path

Goals and Are We Getting There
Solid states, standards standing, companion input
Careful caring, carefully care-free, kindred kindling
Draw on divination, brewed tea, repaired fractures
Factions gonna faction but let’s be the waylaid
The sea doesn’t change
The simple machines
The severed

Balance and Rotate All Tires
Violence is
Balance is
The day or the week is and is
That which was
What what when where
Valence, vagrant, vie
The last view from the last train
Tried trials, tried it all
Not that which they know
Not that which they want
Want is
Want is
Want is
When we go to shore, we’re pacing
When we go to market, we’re well-dressed
What are days or nights?
What are morning cups of coffee
Meals over sinks
We wake anywhere the days
Now, these days
You, these days
All the serpents and their tails
Balance is
The day or the week is and is
That which was
What what when where
Valence, vagrant, vie
The last view from the last train
Tried trials, tried it all
Not that which they know
Not that which they want

The Watch, the Road, the Onion
All the lyrics you’ve ever misheard, conspiring to make some sense of this life you live
All the mistreated and the memories of their treatment
All the reasons you walked out that door, through that door, to that door
All the rationalizing, the lying, the lazy
All the deep bassy laughter of the universe
All the waves in all the oceans
All the unknowable
And then there’s the sun
All the mistreated and the memories of their treatment
All the reasons you walked out that door, through that door, to that door
All the rationalizing, the lying, the lazy
All the deep bassy laughter of the universe
All the waves in all the oceans
All the unknowable
And then there’s the sun

This One Is for the Gaps
Did you see then way back in the day?
All the acquired tastes like word you’ve added to the dictionary
The suns at every angle
The time you’ve spent holding your breath underwater
Ocean, lakes, rivers, pools
The invention of the engine + all the amazing things magnets do
Lining up anything end to end and you’re covering the planet or reaching the moon
That dust sometimes pulls itself together into a great big ball
Like there is a cube and you are in it
For the love of prime numbers, I exit myself a moment
And bricks become a house
And fences happened and there was no turning back
All the acquired tastes like word you’ve added to the dictionary
The suns at every angle
The time you’ve spent holding your breath underwater
Ocean, lakes, rivers, pools
The invention of the engine + all the amazing things magnets do
Lining up anything end to end and you’re covering the planet or reaching the moon

It Didn’t Rain
Today the air
And the moon
A herd of deer through backyard
Or flightless birds in listless times
What is where
And what what they all want
All the things in the last box
I’ll see you when I see you
And the moon
A herd of deer through backyard
Or flightless birds in listless times
What is where
And what what they all want
All the things in the last box
I’ll see you when I see you

We See Opals
Open over everything
You care for what you’ll care for
Gather groups, gather people
Done and gone and gone and gone
Be they long roads or shifting sands
Be they here and now
Be they waves to sand, waves to shore
Not not not the shed around back
Not not what you’re counting
Calendars come this bend bent
There so many stars
You care for what you’ll care for
Gather groups, gather people
Done and gone and gone and gone
Be they long roads or shifting sands
Be they here and now
Be they waves to sand, waves to shore
Not not not the shed around back
Not not what you’re counting
Calendars come this bend bent
There so many stars

Husk Hack Heathens
Keep all your limbs about you
Smush your face into the turf a moment
What would your last meal be?
Something rare? Something from your childhood?
Reach out to your family and find out how they’re doing
Each age is something
And we are here
You
You and I
You and I working through all the things
All the things all around you and multiplying
This world is so very beautiful in your face, in your ears, in your mouth
And it will be here still
Smush your face into the turf a moment
What would your last meal be?
Something rare? Something from your childhood?
Reach out to your family and find out how they’re doing
Each age is something
And we are here
You
You and I
You and I working through all the things
All the things all around you and multiplying

This Is What You Want
A new iOS update pulling down to my phone
Or we build a lego tower nearly to the ceiling
All the Christmas trees on all the curbs
The birds singing the morning while you walk the dogs
The sun free from clouds
Beaches, oceans, forest trails, waterfalls
People holding hands as the rollercoaster cars crest the first highest peak
Ice cream cones, freshly made lemonade, a dollar found in your jeans pocket
Have some and have some more
Close your eyes and have some more
Breathe deep and have some more
Have some more, have some more
The sea is rising, have some more
The sea is rising, the sea is rising
Or we build a lego tower nearly to the ceiling
All the Christmas trees on all the curbs
The birds singing the morning while you walk the dogs
The sun free from clouds
Beaches, oceans, forest trails, waterfalls
People holding hands as the rollercoaster cars crest the first highest peak
Ice cream cones, freshly made lemonade, a dollar found in your jeans pocket
Have some and have some more
Close your eyes and have some more
Breathe deep and have some more
Have some more, have some more
The sea is rising, have some more
The sea is rising, the sea is rising
We Wait on Three
The hold part of hold still
The still part of still at it after all these years
The years on top of years on top of years
The still part of still at it after all these years
The years on top of years on top of years

The Ocean Doesn’t Care
The ocean doesn’t care what you did yesterday
Or didn’t do
It’s rough and we’re over
It’s flat and we’re over
Peaks and troughs and we’re over
All these big things in the face of bigger things
All these places
Wells are a thing
And gravity
The sun doesn’t care either
The sun won’t care
The moon hangs in the sky
But was once a giant cloud of dust
Smashed off the Earth so long ago
And so we find comfort in the night
In the cold or in warmth
In blankets or in rain
All around us, so much
So much
Or didn’t do
It’s rough and we’re over
It’s flat and we’re over
Peaks and troughs and we’re over
All these big things in the face of bigger things
All these places
Wells are a thing
And gravity
The sun doesn’t care either
The sun won’t care
The moon hangs in the sky
But was once a giant cloud of dust
Smashed off the Earth so long ago
And so we find comfort in the night
In the cold or in warmth
In blankets or in rain
All around us, so much
So much
