It's December Is What's Next
(I was away from here all November as I worked on a novel-that-became-a-novella-to-be over here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZLHWNsyWO5iRZ3NZfJynWRvQIIC4tuyVjhDkjKehHJY ... I don't know if that link is going to work, I'm a little limited here. Anyway it's good to be back to thumb-typing what with the novel-now-novella being mostly finger-types, but true to form I snuck some thumb-typed sections in there and it'll be interesting to see if I can spot the difference when I start editing in a few months. And it'll also be interesting to see what I do with it / about it if I can spot it. More? Less? As a device? And so on.)
Things change you
What do they call these shades that are translucent or semi-transparent or whatever like the opposite of black out shades
Haze out
Wash out
Filter
But "out" is the wrong word what's the word for "half out" instead or Quarter or 10%
You've used photoshop you get what I mean
There are those slides everywhere
God bless the Bronx for what they did or wherever else the cross fade came from
Who gets there first vs. who gets there the loudest vs. fuck all y'all
Hands in the air like like like
Heads nod like like like like
I don't know what you need from me and I don't know what I need so here we are as in here comes 2017 like whoah
Apple blossoms? Rain gaps? Fantasy everything?
Press accuses careerism while forever forevers ever
After which after who after when
I mean, who that which. Which because. That this that there.
Pause-breathe, think-exhale, smile-double, step-step like snap.

Salvage Salvo Scripture
Something like softening everything
Station after station seeks same
Strenuous sauntering in the heat, they'd say
That which which when whenever, they'd say
I'm here! I'm here!
Sideways or refraction falls short
They don't get it
The hand waving, the small pile of drift wood lit up on the beach because it's all the drift wood we could find
Not bad for a Wednesday but it isn't Wednesday
Keeping track of your goods when it's never gonna get any better
And then new things born every day and more sunshine and all the things that happen when you dissolve salt in water
They know the signs and you're ready
Pat pat pat

Cancellations Due to Weather
It's not whether
Wherever you
Forget forget forget
Final sounds are finished songs
Surround sounding sinking sunk
And then Tuesday
And then Wednesday
And then the wood you lean on
Six shots sinking sunk
Forgiveness
Quieter times
Always the sun

Awwwuulll These People or What It Means to Go from Place to Place
Line line line it up I'm barely standing
Like oceans to the sea
Like tired people in tired places
Like this whole income thing and every other thing
And then the trailer parts of trailer trucks all lined up at the Pepsi Distribution Center waiting for the truck parts to come and take them places
Drive up windows for fast food and banks and coffee
Tshirt shops on boardwalks on beaches
All that wood out in the sun all summer long
Hurricane shutters, shatter-proof glass, childproof bottle caps
This over time and that over time and you, too, over time
Think about the last time you took a good look at the sky and what you were feeling right beforehand
Or the last time you saw someone driving with their turn signal on and didn't know it
What train tracks do
What chainlink fences do
Any job well-done
And then time alone
Quiet and alone
Like oceans to the sea
Like tired people in tired places
Like this whole income thing and every other thing
And then the trailer parts of trailer trucks all lined up at the Pepsi Distribution Center waiting for the truck parts to come and take them places

Mantle and Its Opposite
Thunder and lightning and lies
The things we say about every action
Or a desk and the ducking and the covering
Thursday is a day and so is Friday
Fancy everything, the ground we walk on, moments after the rain stops
The last slice of pizza is not a thing
Line after line after line in the sand
And it's late at night
And it's early in the morning
And this thing and this thing and this thing are all piled up
The way thunder rolls in the distance
How some things just float
The things we say about every action
Or a desk and the ducking and the covering
Thursday is a day and so is Friday
Fancy everything, the ground we walk on, moments after the rain stops

Welcome to I Woke Up Before You
Want want want
Have have have
Private private
I see more than darkness
And days will always vary
If it's teeth or swollen weather
Let it be heat like a brick
Let it be water to my neck and welcomed
Let it be wrapped in anything
An egg in it, a cherry on it, one of those long spoons like at Friendly's
What do you own?
And what is too many?
Trouble with troubles and it's nowhere near time to go
Thatch together so shelter and stay awhile
Like stew and statements and stamen
It's all in your head because it's supposed to be
Have have have
Private private
I see more than darkness
And days will always vary
If it's teeth or swollen weather
Let it be heat like a brick

Those Perfect Things That Would Kill You
I'm not talking about preservation
Rings, boats, fruit and other foodstuffs
Not scurvy, not rickets
And these other things come in threes, but not these and not today
Today the real is all too real
Today is unasked for remembrances
Today is what you'll walk into around the corner of you aren't paying attention
A deer family on the side of the road -- mom and two fawns born so late in the season
The old kind of torrents
Turrets, tribulation, trial, tradition
A wistful day has its sad parts
And regrets are what they are
Rings, boats, fruit and other foodstuffs
Not scurvy, not rickets
And these other things come in threes, but not these and not today
Today the real is all too real

Golden Levers Evens Now
From now on
Frightful vs. fearful
Fearless from froth
Feckless freckled front
Golden great great grinning
Ginned gains gained
Granted
Helping her heave
Heavenward hoisted
Pulleys are like simple machines only less so
Nothing's right from now on
Out of a metaphorical starting gate
Or a cage between your ears
Or a blue heron in a little creek and winter's on its way
Only running slow this year
Today? Felt like a hundred out there
Frightful vs. fearful
Fearless from froth
Feckless freckled front
Golden great great grinning
Ginned gains gained

And Then a Throw-In
It starts once you have a line
Like the way light made dark, before that there was just a great volume of whatever
When is what happened what happened and when is it a model or a map
Let's squash down the dimensions here, place a camera there, some strategic lighting and then we pretend it means something
The thing about words is you can say anything
The thing about life
The thing about meals
The thing about math
The thing about people
The thing about disease
You're better off looking up today

What I Mean Is We Need It All
What I mean is which one goes first
Or leaves first
Or which is which
On a Wednesday
And then there are the meals and the accountants
Powerlines doing what powerlines do
Stacks of magazines, demolition, containers of every sort
The buildings you've seen and the buildings you haven't
What can you imagine
On a Wednesday?

A Bridge and a Breeze
What bounces has better
Bitter benefits
Like waste-water
Like welcoming the dead
Like-minded, like-mannered
My last wish or trick or tremble
Breathing is a trick if you are inanimate
Thunder is a natural occurrence
If you're going to make an omelet
If you are going to make a difference
Half the haves
Bake bread
Know where your next foot will fall
And all the ants you'll trample

That's the thing about context
I mean, that's the thing about again
And then this thing about circles from other to make better to really smaller and worse
And then the dog and priorities

How seldom you think about furniture
Different again and this time the kind of difference that's burned a village

Tired tired tired tired, I'm so glad you're ordering Chinese
Done gonna find a whale road and other stories
Sky-showers meet electric shavers
The invention of brunch meet Eastern Standard Time
Your worst thoughts meet my latest manifesto about horizons and event horizons and fudge that does focus on chocolate

(for Adam Robinson)
I'm up early
Though not as early as usual
I'm a morning person
But early enough that you're not up
Or you or you or you
And the order of the cats' food and water bowls are reversed
So now it's food - water
And then noticing the dog's bowls are switched around too
And I feel like maybe I slipped sideways
Everything has a reason
Doesn't mean
Everything has a good reason
Or
Everything has a reason you'll understand
Or
I mean
Like that which matrix math past pictures and and and but for where where that which
In high school I used to think all the time about
What if the experiment wasn't repeatable because it was something that would only work that once in space and time
Like that was an important variable
And maybe it is
If it was then magic?
What do you have for me, today?
vs.
What will today bring?
vs
Whatcha gonna do today, Jamie?
Minus all the plans
The thing about the cat food bowls and dogs food bowls was gonna be a tweet, but I couldn't get it right in the space
It'd be better there though, I think
Floating where nobody sees it until maybe someone does

Some So Summary Stalled
When darning is damned
And all the bumps man-made and rounded
When the snags are most snarled
And the dogs slump home for supper
The sun will have settled
The snow will be banked and browning
See the light
It is from a torch
And the torch-bearer will be your friend a while
See the water
It is fresh
Because this is that kind of story
The brackish bogs are in your dreams
You brought them here
And the rotting and the mold and the spore of all those other things
Everything breaks down if you have the time
What are you doing with that?
And will it be enough?

The way your pets breathe when they're sleeping restfully
All the long words, all the short words
Arms vs. armature
Against all odds no matter what you say
Can you look at me now?
Everything drains that drops
To your side, on your side, on your back, on your side again
Ball joints at the corners and a pen in your hand
Here and here and a dotted line and here
Gather
Gather until it matters
And then go
All the men named David, and they all twist their bodies just so
All the men named David, and they all look into the distance

What it's like to look out the window on the train and your eyes follow a dirt path winding along with you
"You are beautiful and strange, and I wouldn't have it any other way"
Solution equation when the solution is
An alloy, an alibi, an alkaline battery, and so much more
We live in times where more is all you can depend on
We live in times made of all the times
The end of history played out differently than expected as all time and space collapsed into itself and what was left could only be described as a flower
So very fast on the highway and your speedometer was the digital kind
Liquid crystal, superconductors, graphite
Homonym after homonym, homeschooling, halberd
Stand up for all of it

We Will Run Our Things Our Own Way
The way the moon speaks to the ocean
You can't have it all vs. you can't have most anything at all
The way buds become leaves and Spring to Summer to Fall
Wind

Grass is an anchor that came too late
Things that eat things and the things they eat
This language is a shoddy virus

Another King Is Done
Another King is dead
We killed another King
I've imagined a King who drove a milk truck
With red hair and these lips that everyone noticed
Have you ever seen a King play banjo?
Or write poems?
There was a King with a stompbox
And a second, earlier red-headed King
There was a King with a magnificent beard and a penchant for vampire stories
We killed a King who drank too much
We killed a King that went to medical school
King slayer, Rebel, overthrower
We've killed a King with a nose and another with powder white hair
Perfect powder white hair
Sit by the water and enjoy your meal
Watch the sun take its time
Take your time
Tomorrow we'll surely start the search all over all over

All the Next Choices You'll Make
You're buying an aquarium, what color rocks do you get for the bottom?
The way gravity speaks to you and everything
That guy in Korea who balances all those things and then snaps his fingers
The places you've spent a year or more
And then sleep and then eating and walking
You get to decide what the units of measure will be
Pay attention to swaying
Climbing the ladder, hip checks, hanging in the air
Concentrate and you'll get it
Let your arms hang loose and you'll get it
Practice daily and you'll get it
Relax your focus and you'll get it
Who's out in front and who's trailing?

Amazing Things Are Happening in Nondescript Locations all across this Land
Dramatic settings are full-up with emptiness
Beautiful people are pining away behind the counters of gas station mini-marts
Wasting away, dulling, breathing, rusting
Orange jams up against brick red, acid pink with acid green, dull gray and brilliant blue
Clouds are moving at different speeds at different altitudes and never mixing
While hot air is rising
There are thousands of places you can get a mocha
Or be painfully honest with your family
Friends are to be had in chain restaurants and big box stores and 7-11 parking lots
There are lives to be lived
Oxygen to be breathed
Atmospherics to be appreciated
Then sparrows, sunsets, oceans and lakes and of course rivers
The moon was once part of us and is now part of all this
Think about your chest rising and falling
Think about every step everyone is taking everywhere
All at once, as in forever
Believe

There Have Been Crazy Times / There Have Been Crazier Times
Way way down underneath all the turtles and the dreams and the whatnot, what you have is a matter of inconsistent distribution of all the things
The good things, the bad things, the blue things, the new things
And then there are the laws, all the laws
There's osmosis but also active gradients
There's energy, all kinds of energy
Walking down stairs seems simple enough and then it isn't
Breathing seems simple enough or swallowing or hearing or feeling and the. It isn't
Sometimes for fun
Sometimes by mistake
Sometimes because the cards have just been dealt and that's that you're out of draws
This is all stupid, all of it
This isn't the kind of thing
What I mean is:
Extenuating circumstances, escape plans, exit wounds, entrapment
Forcing everything and the Force
Giant is better when it's gigante, gopher holes, gigabytes
Forget-me-nots vs. full blooms vs. maritime mastery of all sorts
Helpful highways, how could you, Havre de Grace
I'm always thinking is my problem

Built Upon
Walk a road to a point and die.
Sit still. Inhale. Exhale.
Filter, hang out, make a shell.
Carapace, exoskeleton, skin, so on.
A hoodie underneath a hooded jacket and a baseball cap underneath that.
That's for you, I usually call it a zippy.
A ladder to the moon rendered in pixels because it's what we want(ed).
A pattern doesn't need you to see it
The ocean will never know your name
Nobody predicted grass
Thousands of balls bouncing down steps and pegs, around rocks, over cliffs, swirling in pools, making canyons.
What is this place?
And all the other questions you ask on a Saturday

We Get Thrown, Too
The bedrooms of Western Civilization
The ponies, the Maypoles, the beaver meadows
If you make it you can fall it apart
France
Industrial blue meets industrial materials
Tracks
Trainers vs. jumpers vs. the language of the conquered

Meanwhile and/or Elsewhere
I have this dream where I'm shopping for a winter coat
When I realize I already have a great winter coat
A nice bench in a nice park
Sunlight through leaves
The invention of polka dots or polka for the matter
You have needs and then you don't
Imagination vs. settling up
Keeping your word in an Old West shootout
The value of your vote
Heavy memories, heavy water, and all the moonchildren everywhere
You have a right to this and this and this and this
And you have the price gun, too, and it's Sunday somewhere, and you're going to make it matter this time

Mathematical Functions as a Way of Life
Spiritual habit
Soccer practice
Sleepwalk serenade
Serendipitous selflessness
Pick up and shut up
Front doors imply backdoors
All the waterways

There's tomorrow

Hurtling toward what's expected
Countdowns and roll calls and jump offs
Everything that comes to mind when I say, "Forgotten flowers"
The grazers of the savannah and then everyone else
Tell and tell and tell and tell
Do you come over the top?
Does your train travel faster now?
Have you thought about how it'll end?
A boom mic here, lighting there, sometimes a script and sometimes less so
Stretch and breathe until you see it
But we won't be able to wait for everyone

Sunday and the Wind
Phyllo dough is a thing
Croissants are a thing
Sunday is a day
Seasons are collections of days
Stretching is a good idea
This world is what it is
There are ideas you can't unthink
And patterns want to keep it their patterned way
And life all the way down to the biology of it is a mix of that and something else
The wind is sweeping over Baltimore this morning

Opening Day, Opening Day Approaches
Sobriety is the crew-less month
#TacoTuesday but when it's Thursday
Line up all the things you're thankful for and call it a day
A ton, by a mile, a second
There are games that let you engage at any level and that's ok
Charles Manson stole this song from the Beatles and we're stealing it back
I mean "platforms" and political parties and me
The levels don't judge and don't want to judge, so stop making them judge
I mean everything
I mean a cat is a cat
I mean whatever wine tastes like whatever wine
As long as you want it that way
Throwback, throwback, throwback
Swwwwwwing batter-batter
Here. Have a hurdle. You'll like it.

My Voice on this Subject and Does It Matter
Do you make these lists?
I don't know if it's helpful
There are a lot of counter-intuitives out there
And words keep squishing along
Not saving anyone
Not fixing anything
Not helping it out long term
Until it does all those things
I'd be better off with things this morning
Things as far as the eye can see
My eyes, I mean
Out the train window

More Fluids
Always more fluids
Flattened tongues vs. distended bellies
Deep peering into murky pasts
Silent staircases and darkened corners
A bookshelf, a floor lamp, a searchlight on the prow of a motorboat
A certain blue, a certain green, a certain orange-ish brown
White text on a black background and then soon, everything
Taste test after taste test
Everything on fire

Some of March and Heartbeats
The swell
The roughest things
An ancient burial people with so many words for burying
That battlefield that's now a strip mall
Giant everything
The clear sound of a bell which bell
Picture after picture after picture
Transparencies as in projections but on a shelf and waiting to be projected
Another tone when it is time

All The Things (That Have Been on My Mind Lately)
How much time, floods, foregrounds and forever, subjects, objects, goals, goal-line stands
I know very little about photography
The way future -- that's been on my mind a lot
There's this way a voice can cut right through you or a moment or something you see
And I've been trying to stick right in that moment
Maybe a little too much vs. maybe that's my job vs. maybe that's just what I'm supposed to be here
I've never understood how sugar in coffee could taste good, but I remember a great cup of coffee with maple syrup in it and milk before I knew I shouldn't drink that
And this guy that was into all this international lit before I got that
You know, cool and worldly and conversant in Milan Kundera and Amos Oz and the Singing Detective
And I have this story about his girlfriend
They probably all moved to New York or Amsterdam or went into the Peace Corps
What made me remember that?
So many people come and go and some of them are just gone
One more plan until I'm home

Some People Really Like Cake
I'm not gonna lie
I miss ice cream
Then there's cookies and candy and honey
Here we go, here we go, here we go
There are winners
That's one way of looking at things
There are no winners
There are no right ways to go about it other than just going
Something and then cake and then something else
Make a go of it
The thing about a landscape painting -- take it all in
A funny hat -- put it on
Oh no, oh no, oh no
I can't be trusted to work it all out

Pluto and its moon
Ice over everything
Your kinda ice, their kinda ice
A real long pause
Comfort vs. less so
Less and less and less and less
Never goes negative
And then there is more

And then there is dinner
Ice over everything

Gotta Gotta Gotta Gotta Get Get Get Get
All the things you mean
All the fingers and all the dams
Heaven for humpday
And hail for heretics
There are theories and stories and frameworks and terms
Mean it
There are days that call for a little extra snuggling
And then cats on the bed
And the way you could see the whole moon even though the bright part was just a sliver of a smile
It goes around but we do, too
The ocean swells up to say hello
The ocean dips to say nothing to see here
The ocean rushes and courses and cycles and squalls
You do it with your eyes
All the fingers and all the dams
Heaven for humpday
And hail for heretics
There are theories and stories and frameworks and terms
Mean it
There are days that call for a little extra snuggling
And then cats on the bed
And the way you could see the whole moon even though the bright part was just a sliver of a smile
It goes around but we do, too
The ocean swells up to say hello
The ocean dips to say nothing to see here
The ocean rushes and courses and cycles and squalls
You do it with your eyes

A mind is a terrible thing to make up like all the things make up means
You see a young kid walking with their mom at 4:30am and it's still dark out and cold and the kid's all bundled up and you feel all kinds of things and then think all kinds of things
This happens in West Baltimore and I don't doubt a lot of places
I've always loved that I'm a morning person
I've been blessed with so many cheat codes
Another chance to not be afraid
Don't be afraid don't be afraid don't be afraid
Comfort is relative
Bowling ball vs. bed springs
Motion vs. other motion
Who has time for things like a smattering of whatever?
Look at all that ice: We are alive
(aloft, along, elongate, crush, crush, crush, crush, goose)
Windy af coming in though

There's Only One Salmon on Blue
The same and we all share it
There is only one light, and it shows up everywhere
There is only one planet and one star and one plane and one air
There is one salt and we share it
There is a kingdom with a tower and a door
There is a road with a stripe and a wide berth
There is only one beginning and we
There is only one light, and it shows up everywhere
There is only one planet and one star and one plane and one air

Forge Forget
Fancy
Flowered
Forced march
Garish grim granted
Wherever you will have it
Whenever whatever is eaten
Everything falls off a cliff in a story about things falling off cliffs
A secret society of stenographers
Stutter stutter stutter
Sputtering engines especially when you need them
Never night time
Twice twinkling, twice mine
They are all fairytales, each and everyone
